Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV)
The Winter quarter lessons highlight the essential teachings of the Bible in relation to the defining elements of Christian faith.
Unit 1, “Our Holy God and the Holy Scriptures,” invites students to seek strength and comfort from the triune God–Father, Son, and Holy Spirit–as revealed through the Holy Scriptures. God reveals Himself as invested in relationships, both within the Godhead and all of creation. Biblical images convey this relationship in various ways: God as Father and Son, as a shepherd, as an abiding presence, and as an advocate or comforter. The Bible teaches that we may seek and know God through the glory of creation and the majesty of the inspired Word.
Unit I1, “Grace and Reconciliation,” contains reminders that, first, human beings are in sin, separated from God. People jeopardize the relationships for which God created them by insisting on their own way–a form of idolatry. Christ’s atoning sacrifice at Calvary reconciles sinners to God and one another and calls believers into the covenant community, the church. The church calls Christians to practice the means of grace–spiritual disciplines such as confession, prayer, learning, and caring for and supporting one another in the community.
Unit III, “The Church and Its Teachings,” recalls the image of the church as the body of Christ, spiritually gifted for ministry and mission,. The ordinances of baptism and the Lord’s Supper nourish and empower the church to live as Christ’s body in the world, calling all people to repent for the forgiveness of sins and proclaiming the coming reign of God.
